  Text Size

Definition: According to the Mayo clinic

Parkinson's disease: is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects your movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while a tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson's disease, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement.

  • Slowed movement
  • Rigid muscles
  • Impaired posture and balance
  • Loss of automatic movement (i.e. blinking)
  • Speech and/or writing changes
  • Dementia

From the initial onset of Parkinson’s disease people start to notice some of the typical symptoms of tremors, shaking, poor posture, and loss of balance or abnormal facial expressions that may begin as being an inconvenience of the day-to-day tasks but as the disease progress it will become progressively more debilitating. Tasks of daily living activities such bathing, dressing, brushing, and eating become more difficult. Since there is no cure at this time but, with medication and or surgery it may help to improve the symptoms of the disease. But, the disease itself will continue to progress and making one more debilitated that by the time the disease has progressed to a stage five level one would require one-on-one care.
